According to the world’s largest public opinion survey, the Peoples’ Climate Vote 2024, people worldwide are experiencing climate change in increasingly uncontrollable ways. The survey highlights 20 of the world’s biggest greenhouse gas emitters, with the majority of respondents believing in the urgency of addressing climate issues. This ranges from 66% in the United States and Russia, 67% in Germany, 73% in China, 77% in South Africa and India, 85% in Brazil, 88% in Iran, and up to 93% in Italy. But do you realize that the Earth is suffering? These statistics are not just numbers; they serve as a wake-up call for everyone to tackle the challenges posed by climate change. Estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO) suggest that by 2050, climate change could lead to approximately 250,000 additional deaths each year. Moreover, a study from the World Economic Forum predicts that 14.5 million deaths could occur by 2050 due to climate-related disasters.
Governments, NGOs, and climate activists around the globe are striving to promote renewable energy. In India, the government is actively addressing climate issues through various initiatives, including the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) and its eight missions, the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), and the National Solar Mission (NSM). The Honorable Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi, has also introduced a net-zero goal for India by 2070. To achieve this ambitious target, everyone must collaborate, from planting seeds to nurturing saplings. Tackling climate change requires a collective effort from all of us. A young brigade of green storytellers and public relations professionals hold the power to illuminate India’s climate action on the global stage. As we celebrate Earth Day, let’s remember to raise our voices and advocate for action if you want to listen to the heartbeats of tomorrow!
Public Relations: Voice for the Climate Action
Did you know the highest temperature ever recorded in India was 52.3°C (126.1°F) in Mungeshpur, Delhi, on May 29, 2024? And this year, January was the warmest January to date on record globally. Temperatures all around the world are on the rise as a result of climate change, as reported by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Consequently, 2025 is expected to be hotter than previous years, increasing the chances of extreme heat occurrences. The challenges posed by climate change and global warming call for more extensive and intricate solutions; as a result, the expertise of green storytellers is increasingly sought after, and the role of public relations and social media could be crucial for the success of the initiatives. As per the UNDP (United Nations Development Programs), “PR is an integral component in the fight against climate change, this is recognised by scientists and global institutions.
A recent example of how social media can effectively raise awareness and give a voice to the innocent lives of animals is the insensitive destruction of a 400-acre forest in Hyderabad. Videos capturing the distress of birds fleeing the forest resonated with millions, leading to protests and heightened concerns about the incident. Thanks to the efforts of social media and the involvement of passionate young activists, the destruction was halted, helping to save the flora and fauna in this vital green space in western Hyderabad. People are becoming more aware and informed via such platforms and with effective storytelling.
Startup Boom in the Sector
Amid escalating climate change and challenges, cleantech startups have emerged as the key drivers of a greener future. As consumers become conscious of eco-friendly brands, these ventures are introducing innovative solutions that balance economic growth with sustainability. Startups in this sector are at the forefront of combating climate change and achieving net zero goals. From rooftop solar solutions to eco-friendly air and water purification systems, these efforts by Indian startups reflect their commitment towards reducing the environmental impact of industrialisation and urbanisation.
India plays a key role in global emissions and climate change as the world’s most populous country with a population of nearly 1.4 billion people. It is gaining global attention for its robust public-private partnerships as well as impactful green storytelling leading to a transformative era of sustainability, such as the Green India Mission and the promotion of green bonds. The nation’s commitment to renewable energy and proactive climate action, combined with its focus on green finance, is drawing global interest. With powerful storytelling, the nation educates and inspires action on major environmental issues, highlighting its leadership in sustainability on the world stage.
